The hard, hard work of supporting a death

Much has been said about dying and about how hard a death can be on loved ones. But I’ve never seen anything like this email, which I received this morning. It’s from Myra Isaacs and Jan Oldenburg, who became the primary caregivers and care organizers for “Mighty Casey” Quinlan, who died April 25 after a month in a skilled nursing facility under the supervision of hospice.

In the past I’ve seen bits and pieces of the many tasks listed here but holy cow, when it’s all put together, it’s sobering. It’s a lot of work, at an unhappy and often stressful time.

I myself was not with them at Casey’s side in Richmond – I’m just the messenger who was blown away by this email and asked to publish it.

[Notes: “Mary” was Casey’s given first name at birth. She never liked the name, so adopted her original last name as her first. CeCe (Cecelia) is her sister.]

Question for the diabetes community: should Freestyle readings match finger sticks?

Screen capture from Peer To Peer Health Advice video

This is an exercise in “peer to peer health advice.” I’m asking for advice, from “the DOC” (diabetes online community) – more on that below.

Here’s a message I received from someone who’s really peeved about a technology for managing his Type 2 diabetes. Does your experience match his? Should his digital device match the results from finger sticks? If not, for heaven’s sake why?

America hasn’t, but Europe re-opened safely. We can catch up. Here’s how.

As a subscriber to Amazon’s Audible books, I get a really good daily digest from the Wall Street Journal: four selected articles plus an editorial. Not surprisingly, many recent articles have been about the virus, including two yesterday. The first was the usual roundup of statistics, with no holds barred on how bad it is in the US, due to stupid re-openings. The second had coverage from Europe that bears repeating: How Europe Kept Coronoavirus Cases Low Even After Reopening. Key points:

Superpatient principle #1: Good science is measurable, verifiable, and reproducible

I’ve been writing (and speaking) about this Superpatients concept and book for more than a year, and it was stuck for the longest time as I groped for some organizing context in which to explain everything. I mean, here we have all these amazing stories of amazing people who’ve done remarkable things, with some common themes weaving in and out, but it just didn’t have any framework on which to hang those themes. And without a framework, I can’t explain anything.

50 years ago today: the first meeting that led to “Our Bodies, Ourselves”

Courtesy of Our Bodies, Ourselves

Fifty years ago today, at Emmanuel College in Boston, a group of uppity women got together to talk about what was important to them about their health. Tomorrow night (Friday, May 10) some of them will gather again, with people from Suffolk University, which is taking over as Our Bodies Ourselves Today. (See that post.)
