It’s time to adopt a good working definition of empowerment.

A major theme of my work last year was that it’s time to create a science of patient engagement (see blog posts) – a rigorous inquiry into what patient engagement is, what factors (parameters) increase it, which ones diminish it, develop some hypotheses that researchers can test. This was the theme of my visit to the Mayo Clinic as Visiting Professor in Internal Medicine in March and my tenure as NEHI’s Patient Engagement Fellow.

A science needs practical definitions. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions notes that until a field has an agreement on what a concept means, the practitioners in the field literally have nothing in common to talk about. I’ve seen that myself, when people talk about empowerment but the field goes nowhere.

It’s time for definitions.

Fortunately, a useful definition of empowerment exists.

Quick year-end wrap – and winter retreat.

Through Monday, January 11 I’ll be on reduced availability, for a period of “retreat and think.” It’s not a full-bore vacation; I’ll be reading and writing (and blogging), but I won’t be responding to most emails.

I can still be reached for anything time-sensitive and I will still monitor contacts from media and potential clients, per the Contact page.

August: “retreat and think”

For the month of August I’ll be mostly offline, for a period of “retreat and think.” It’s not a full-bore vacation; I can still be reached for anything time-sensitive (see my Contact page) but I’ll be less active online.

This year has already been full of change – Ginny’s knee replacements, Visiting Professor at Mayo, the first Patient Engagement Fellowship, new publications, and most of all, rethinking what “patient” means (and could mean), per the book that made paradigms famous: The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (right). Our movement is gaining traction, which means a change agent needs to rethink. This month is good for that (I’m only traveling to one event), so I’m going to dial back the dialog.

September will be amazing.

One reason to retreat now is that on August 28 the calendar flips from empty to packed.

This spring I had a couple of cases where people said “I wish I’d known you were coming – we could have had coffee!” (That’s always compelling to me…) So I’m going to try publishing a monthly update (more or less) of upcoming travels, newly added future events, and maybe a few other things. Short & sweet. Thank you to Casey Quinlan, a focused production machine if I ever saw one, for making this happen!

“The unfolding science of patient engagement”: foreword in a new book

Photo of the foreword pageIn 2013 I was interviewed during the creation of a book called Person-Centered Care, part of a project called Co-Creating Healthcare produced by Danish firm Sustainia and the German firm DNV GL. It’s a remarkable project – a series of three substantial books, all distributed as free downloads on the project’s site. (They also have print editions, but I don’t see any way to buy one!)

In January they completed the third phase of the project, a series of roundtables in Europe, China and the Americas: The State of Healthcare: From Challenges to Opportunities. I participated in the Washington meeting, and they asked me to write a foreword for the final book, which was released last month.

Because the foreword focuses on the “defining a new science of patient engagement” theme I’ve been writing about, I want to re-post it below.

As you can see by browsing the books on the project site, the whole Co-Creating Healthcare project is amazing in its depth (and the beauty of the book spreads), so I’m just thrilled that for the foreword of the final book, they chose this idea. Thank you!

Speaker Academy #18: Client Honor Roll – great and valued business partners

This is the latest in the Speaker Academy series, which started here. The series is addressed to patients and advocates who basically know how to speak on a subject but want to make a business out of it. I’ll try to be clear to all readers, but parts may assume you’ve read earlier entries.

In #16 I said “For a small business, cash is king.” This is especially true for patients who are trying to build a small business in speaking, with no financial backing. In this post I want to “spotlight the spotless” – my clients who have honored our partnership by paying every single invoice within the agreed time of 30 days. Thank you!! A couple of foonotes before we start:

  • Date range: This is for events starting January 2013 and ending April 2014. (This May’s events haven’t reached 30 days yet.)
    • I hope to dig back earlier, but before 2013 I was in survival mode and my records were sometimes not accurate. Meanwhile, clients – if you remind me that you paid promptly I’ll be glad to include you – just let me know!
  • Special honor: Some clients are so great that they’re in a special category – they paid on-site or EARLY! (And they reimbursed my out-of-pocket expenses promptly.) So I’ll start with them:
